Alicante is a historically and culturally rich city. During the course of its 7000 year history the area has been ruled by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans. In Roman times there was a town, known as Lucentum, where Alicante now stands. Moors invaded the area in the 8th century and held control over Eastern Spain through the 11th century. The Castilian King retook the town in 1246 but it quickly became part of the Kingdom of Valencia under the Aragonese. Evidence of all these conquerors can still be seen in the towns buildings and museums.

Throughout its history Alicante has alternated between periods of prosperity and decline. Changing governments and economic factors have greatly influenced the cities fortunes. Today it is one of the fastest growing cities in Spain. Tourism is directly responsible for this growth. Since the 1950’s and 1960’s the city has been one of Spain’s busiest tourist cities.

One of the most popular tourist sites in Alicante is the Esplanade de Espana, the main pedestrian walkway. Consisting of 6.5 million black, red and cream marble stones and surrounded by palm trees this is one of the loveliest promenades in all of Spain. Locals use it as a popular meeting spot and outdoor concerts can be enjoyed here throughout the year.

Northeast of the Esplanade, in the narrow streets of the old quarter, known as El Barro, you will find the best nightlife in Alicante. It is also the location of the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, a 17th century cathedral. This beautiful cathedral is widely considered to be one of the best example of the Spanish baroque period.

A short ways off the coast of Alicante is the Island of Tabarca. The island was an important stronghold against pirates early in its history but since 1986 it has been a protected marine reserve. Tourists can still enjoy a variety of water sports with in the reserve area, including fishing, but permits are required.

Alicante is a beautiful city that offers something for everyone. Sun worshippers and history buffs alike can find something in Alicante to make a visit worth their while. Dining in Alicante is a delight for the taste buds with its ample seafood and fresh produce. Any tourist will easily find something they enjoy about Alicante.
